Saxophonist and composer Michel Nirenberg is building bridges between the classical, samba and choro music he grew up playing in Brazil and the jazz music he explored more deeply in the United States.

His compositions celebrate and build on the common roots found in the music of both hemispheres  - a place where African and European influences combine to create a rich and inviting sound.

"Ms. Clarks sound evokes not [Billie] Holiday but Drather a less operatic Sarah Vaughan fused with the more animated side of Shirley Horn, a singer who also liked to take her time. Ms. Clarks voice is rich, her phrasing unfussy, her jazz embellishments minimal. -- Stephen Holden, New York Times

Like [Sarah Vaughan], her natural sound is almost operatic in its richness, but pure jazz in its improvisational sassiness. But when she brings her remarkable instrument to bear on those pop hits of the post-nuclear age, which she clearly loves, she creates something new and amazing. . . .

All of which begs an additional question: Why has Sharn Clark been so overlooked, particularly in New York, for all this time? That is surely going to change." Will Friedwald, Wall Street Journal

"A revelation . . . I never thought I'd hear a singer with the range, musicality and command of tone and timbre that was Sarah at her best, but now I have." JazzTimes

Washington, D.C. standout Sharón Clark has brought festival and concert audiences to their feet across the U.S. and Europe. Her New York run drew raves from the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal, and she won New York’s Bistro Award for Best Vocalist.

Ms. Clark has made multiple international tours in recent years, making her debut in Israel and returning to Russia, where she has developed a major following. Her most recent release, “Do it Again — My Tribute to Shirley Horn,” is on its third printing, and she grabs top honors wherever she goes.

Ms. Clark won the Gold Medal and $10,000 top prize at the Savannah Music Festival's American Traditions Competition. She then took first place in the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, which offers a $2,500 prize along with a featured appearance with the Baltimore Symphony.

Ms. Clark appears regularly in DC at Blues Alley and Loews Madison Hotel. A featured soloist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony, Clark has headlined the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, the Cape May Jazz Festival and the Savannah Music Festival. Both the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and The Ludacris Foundation chose Ms. Clark to perform for their separate tributes to Quincy Jones.

Please donate to Jazzway 6004

Our concerts have high overhead costs.  We incur the same amount in music licensing fees and insurance that larger commercial venues incur, but we wish to sustain a high payout to musicians along with hospitality amenities they often don't get elsewhere.  Because of these high standards, almost all of our concerts operate at a loss. And there are few operating costs grants available for venues our size.

In order to continue to bring you these wonderful concerts without lowering the benefits to the musicians, please consider making a tax deductible donation to Jazzway.  Any donation, large or small will be much appreciated and will help us to retain our high standards.

Thanks! Howard & Marianne
