Charm City Combos with

Alan Blackman

A jazz band experience for amateurs comes to Baltimore.

Finally, it’s here. Your chance to join a jazz combo, rehearse with a professional musician mentor in an exciting local venue, and perform public concerts.

Over the 20 plus years that I’ve been teaching private jazz lessons I’ve had a number of students ask about ensembles they could join to get that small group jazz band playing experience. Up to now in the Baltimore area, there hasn’t been anything I could recommend.

Well, I am thrilled to announce Charm City Combos, my new performance opportunity for adults that are interested in learning the art of jazz combo performance.

Charm City Combos is for you if…

you are excited to learn or improve your jazz playing skills.

you enjoy making great music with others.

you want to be a part of Baltimore’s rich jazz scene.

If you’ve got the desire to get better together, then please give me a shout and let’s get swinging!

THIS SHOW HAS BEEN  RESCHEDULED TO December 17TH AT 5:00!!

The Jazzway Holiday Show with Sharón Clark and the Chris Grasso Trio

Ms. Clarks sound evokes not [Billie] Holiday but Drather a less operatic Sarah Vaughan fused with the more animated side of Shirley Horn, a singer who also liked to take her time. Ms. Clarks voice is rich, her phrasing unfussy, her jazz embellishments minimal. -- Stephen Holden, New York Times

Like [Sarah Vaughan], her natural sound is almost operatic in its richness, but pure jazz in its improvisational sassiness. But when she brings her remarkable instrument to bear on those pop hits of the post-nuclear age, which she clearly loves, she creates something new and amazing. . . All of which begs an additional question: Why has Sharon Clark been so overlooked, particularly in New York, for all this time? That is surely going to change." Will Friedwald, Wall Street Journal

"A revelation . . . I never thought I'd hear a singer with the range, musicality and command of tone and timbre that was Sarah at her best, but now I have." JazzTimes

DC's incomparable vocalist, Sharón Clark presents everyone's favorite holiday tunes, backed by the Chris Grasso Trio. Winner of the Billie Holiday Competition and the American Traditions Vocal Competition, Ms. Clark has been one of the premier vocalists in the Baltimore-Washington area for a decade or more and has received rave reviews for her performances in New York City. She has also toured extensively in Europe during the last few years.  In fact, Ms. Clark has recently moved to Europe and now comes back to the US for periodic performances.  Catch her while she's in town!!  All tickets include soft drinks, a raffle, a post-concert buffet of desserts, cheeses and fruit and a chance to mingle with the artists. Adult beverages (beer, wine cocktails) are also available for a small fee.

Washington, D.C. standout Sharón Clark has brought festival and concert audiences to their feet across the U.S. and Europe. Her New York run drew raves from the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal, and she won New York’s Bistro Award for Best Vocalist.

Ms. Clark has made multiple international tours in recent years, making her debut in Israel and returning to Russia, where she has developed a major following. Her most recent release, “Do it Again — My Tribute to Shirley Horn,” is on its third printing, and she grabs top honors wherever she goes.

Ms. Clark won the Gold Medal and $10,000 top prize at the Savannah Music Festival's American Traditions Competition. She then took first place in the Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, which offers a $2,500 prize along with a featured appearance with the Baltimore Symphony.

Ms. Clark appears regularly in DC at Blues Alley and Loews Madison Hotel. A featured soloist with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony, Clark has headlined the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, the Cape May Jazz Festival and the Savannah Music Festival. Both the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and The Ludacris Foundation chose Ms. Clark to perform for their separate tributes to Quincy Jones.

Please donate to Jazzway 6004

Our concerts have high overhead costs.  We incur the same amount in music licensing fees and insurance that larger commercial venues incur, but we wish to sustain a high payout to musicians along with hospitality amenities they often don't get elsewhere.  In order to continue to bring you these wonderful concerts without decreasing the benefits to the musicians, please consider making a tax deductible donation to Jazzway.  Any donation, large or small will be much appreciated and will help us to retain our high standards.

Thanks! Howard & Marianne
